Business Development Director (Consumer Directed)

Location: 3 Openings, Prefer one incumbent in each region – East, Central, and West and near an Anthem office.

Responsible for coordinating and overseeing the development of new business areas which complements existing offerings. Primary duties to include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyzes market trends, proposes new product/service initiatives,fulfill and interpret customer-specific reporting on spending accountsand coordinates with the Marketing/Product Innovation area to implement products.

  • Provides oversight and resources to key projects.

  • Develops business plans and formulates strategies for both new and existing businesses.

  • Provides research, analysis and recommendations on the external environment as part of the development of strategic plans for the business unit.

  • Analyzes major competitor strategies. Identifies and monitors changing patterns of competition and recommends responses.

  • Plans, directs, and controls the resources and efforts of the reporting and data analysis team to accomplish the business objectives through information management.

  • Manage overall client-specific spending account relationship, product, issue resolution, ongoing education and strategy development.

  • Represent product/capability roadmap to customer.

  • Conduct regular product reviews with customer (select customers only), coordinated with Account team: identify and direct customer-specific approach and actions based on performance (messaging, campaigns, member experience).

  • Establish goals and develop client-specific growth strategies.

  • Conduct monthly/quarterly touch points and advise clients of regulatory changes, legislative updates, education and communication opportunities

  • Provides leadership in motivating indirect subordinates to accomplish reporting and data analysis goals and objectives.

  • Reports project status and progress to VP segment business and other management. Acts as a liaison to other BUs/companies.


Requires a BA/BS degree; 8 - 10 years of business development experience in the healthcare and/or insurance industry including 5 years of progressive direct/indirect leadership responsibilities; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background. Masters degree preferred. Experience in business/product development, client management/consulting and/or marketing preferred. Organizational, analytical, facilitation, consultation, negotiation, persuasion and project management skills required.

Must have possess the following:

  • Experience working with large/national employer client accounts.

  • Experience in serving as a consultant/business advisor to clients providing guidance on services and applying expertise around consumer directed spending accounts.

  • Possess Consumer Directed driven mindset including having successfully empowered employers in making wise choices on their healthcare spending accounts and strategies to deploy strategies to employees.
