GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Regulatory Exams Program Manager plays a key role in managing regulatory requests and market conduct examinations for American Equity’s life insurance companies, including responsibility for coordinating with the Legal Department, providing periodic reporting to senior leadership and interacting directly with regulators from state insurance departments and other regulatory agencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists the current manager of regulatory examinations in responding to regulatory inquiries, data requests and market conduct examinations and managing the end-to-end processes for enterprise-wide onsite examinations by regulators, including but not limited to, agent licensing, training and conduct, replacements, suitability and other functions and processes.

  • Coordinates regulatory examinations, ensuring the successful planning of company responses, timely delivery of requested documentation and monitoring of regulatory issues as follows:

  • Prepares written responses to inquiries, requests and exams.

  • Manages a docket of multiple regulatory matters.

  • Researches applicable rules and interpretive guidance.

  • Leads and coordinates internal working groups of relevant employees to develop responses.

  • Conducts informational interviews with employees and gathers documentation.

  • Communicates extensively, develops strong relationships and interfaces directly with regulators including in-person meetings as appropriate.

  • Assists Compliance and other personnel in working with business partners to assess regulatory examination results, create detailed remediation plans, and monitor progress of action plans through completion.

  • Establishes inventories of exam findings and ensures appropriate documentation of completed remediation.

  • Creates and maintains reports to keep leadership apprised of exam status and serves as the compliance liaison to internal stakeholders involved in the exam process.

  • Identifies and communicates key themes and updates from regulator interactions to all levels of the company.

  • Identifies and recommends process improvements that improve efficiency and quality of the exam process.

  • Performs other related work as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance or related field of study; plus six (6) years of progressively responsible related experience in insurance compliance, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Four (4) years of experience working directly with regulatory examination management at an insurance carrier, financial institution or regulatory agency preferred.

  • Juris Doctorate degree beneficial but not required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS:

Completion of industry designations or relevant industry coursework preferred (i.e. LOMA – AIRC or similar).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Advanced knowledge of state insurance laws, including understanding of the regulatory expectations of the market conduct examination process.

  • Direct experience interfacing with senior state or federal regulators.

  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, project management, and communication skills combined with high level of personal integrity and accountability.

  • Strong customer service orientation.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

  • Ability to successfully handle pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Able to take initiative to avoid regulatory, reputational, legal and financial risks to the company.

  • Ability to make decisions, use independent judgment, establish priorities and work effectively on multiple initiatives concurrently while maintaining strict attention to detail.

  • Comfortable working with people at all organizational levels.

  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion regarding confidential information.

  • Demonstrated ability to closely partner with, advise and prepare key business leaders on regulatory interactions.

  • Assemble requested information in a clear and organized manner that is easily digestible by regulators or third parties.

  • Present complex matters to senior leadership enabling them to effectively advocate company’s position to regulators regarding applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Develop and maintain framework for related document management and sharing.

  • Research and maintain an awareness of significant regulatory changes and exam activity within the insurance industry.

  • Ability to travel 10% of the time.
