UnityPoint Health Director of Compliance in West Des Moines, Iowa

The Director of Compliance provides leadership support for the UPH Compliance Program. This position substantially contributes to the ‘tone at the top’ of the organization in support of appropriate compliance support and decision-making. This position supports the UPH Compliance Committee and Compliance Officer and aids UPH Affiliates for compliance and HIPAA privacy initiatives, as needed. The Director of Compliance functions on behalf of the UPH Compliance Officer to ensure consistent compliance program administration and communications. This position supports the Compliance Committee’s needs and supports and coordinates compliance educational training programs.

The Director of Compliance will be responsible for day-to-day Compliance Program questions, general compliance issues and will be responsive to Affiliates’ compliance needs. The Director of Compliance will have the expertise and experience needed to manage the Program from both a substantive and procedural perspective, knowing when to get the advice of the Compliance Officer or Law Department attorney(s). This responsibility for managing substantive aspects of the Compliance Program requires sufficient substantive knowledge of the compliance risk areas encompassed by the Program so as to support the Compliance Officer in key roles such as identifying and assessing risk and making substantive decisions and recommendations to UPH or Affiliate management, including any applicable Board(s) of Directors.

The Director of Compliance will be available as an additional resource and consultant for Affiliate compliance officers and directors.

  • Serve as the primary Compliance Program management support for the Compliance Officer.

  • Assist with System Compliance Program initiatives and provide Compliance Program support to System and Affiliate compliance officers.

  • Provide support for and assistance with compliance educational training across the System to help ensure regularly scheduled training with all employees. Coordinate the development of compliance educational initiatives across the System.

  • Share “best practices” among Affiliates to enhance compliance activities.

  • Provide administrative support for the UPH Compliance Committee.

  • Act as a consultative resource to System and Affiliate compliance officers, directors and committees.

  • Assist the UPH Compliance Officer in ensuring compliance with federal and state laws while affirming organizational commitment to honesty and integrity in all phases of corporate conduct.

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of needed policies and procedures in accordance with all standards, laws, rules, and regulation.

  • Proactively build compliance culture and identify potential risk areas.

  • Ensure compliance with all Federal health care program laws and regulations.

  • Monitor compliance activities of UPH Affiliates to remain informed of the status of all compliance activities and to identify trends in risk profiles.

  • Represent UPH Compliance Officer in oral and written communications.

  • Present reports on System compliance activities to the UPH and Affiliate compliance officers.

  • Have the professional judgment to be able to exercise the correct independent judgment and decision making. The position needs to ‘know what they don’t know’ so that the person does not give advice that has not had adequate risk assessment done to identify all of the risk or compliance issues.

  • Prioritize projects and allocate resources consistent with UPH Compliance Officer’s directions.

  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance at work.

  • Adhere to all UPH personnel policies and procedures and safety guidelines.

  • Behave in a manner consistent with all compliance policies and procedures.

  • Perform other duties as requested by the UPH Compliance Officer to facilitate the smooth and effective operations of the department.

  • Requires unquestioned ethics, trust and honesty. Handle and maintain highly confidential matters/information and trust of the UPH Compliance Officer and UPH or Affiliate representatives.

  • Requires experience in health care compliance, quality assurance or health care administration and previous experience in law firm, law department, compliance function or health care administrative support experience.

  • Requires knowledge of federal health care laws and regulations and organizational policies, procedures and systems.

  • Requires highly developed communication skills to effectively work with all levels of management throughout UPH, its subsidiaries and Affiliates.

  • Excellent academic credentials with a track record of professional accomplishments, which demonstrate superior performance, leadership and vision.

  • Possesses excellent written and verbal communications and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work as a team member, creating and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Ability to understand and apply guidelines, policies and procedures and exercise initiative, problem solving and decision-making.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software applications.

  • Ability to set priorities in front of multiple requests and to pay close attention to detail and remember details in order to organize projects and communications.


  • Bachelor’s degree and at least five years’ related experience with superior performance.

  • Master’s degree or law degree preferred.

  • Skills and proficiency in current practices and techniques of management and development practices as normally acquired through five or more years in a health care environment.
