POSITION PURPOSE

Under limited supervision, operates hospital power plant equipment to provide power and light in a safe and comfortable manner. Assures proper operation and maintenance of boilers, air conditioning, exhaust fans, vacuum and circulating pumps. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

1.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.

2.

Operates, repairs, prepares for inspection, tests and chemically treats boilers to maintain safe, correct, efficient operating condition according to established standards and procedures.

3.

Operates, repairs, tests and chemically treats chiller systems to maintain safe, correct, efficient operating condition according to established standards and procedures.

4.

Has knowledge, skills and ability to accomplish most tasks in the areas of plumbing, welding, HVAC, install and adjust thermostats and pressure controls.

5.

Ability to troubleshoot, repair and replace HVAC system components, including pumps, motors, traps, valves, regulators, etc., alone and with assistance.

6.

Ensures all electrical feeds to equipment are connected correctly, in proper phase and verify proper voltage and amperages required.

7.

Operates, repairs, cleans and paints boiler room utilities systems, boiler room equipment and boiler room to maintain proper, effective, safe and sanitary operation.

8.

Operates computer’s energy management system, preventative maintenance system and pneumatic tube system.

9.

Performs preventative maintenance and safety tests on equipment and systems according to established procedures and schedules.

10.

Controls and records proper operating temperatures and pressures according to established procedures and practices.

11.

Operates, maintains and tests emergency and standby systems to maintain ready status according to established procedure.

12.

Requests or purchases supplies, parts or equipment necessary to perform maintenance or operating function according to established procedure.

13.

Is knowledgeable of and actively participates in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients. Complies with Safety and Infection Control Policies and Procedures.

14.

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Mercy and Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.

15.

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Mercy and Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduate/GED required. Must maintain a 1st class City of Sioux City, IA. Hydronic Engineer's license or be able to obtain within 4 months of employment. Able to demonstrate the ability to perform the tasks normally associated with at least two of the traditional building trade groups and to work at those tasks with effectiveness, speed and quality of work as per established industry standards. Demonstration may be through a combination of documented prior work performance and real time testing. Traditional building trades include carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, mechanic and general mechanic. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.) Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Mercy and Trinity Health.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must successfully pass employment physical examination and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives. Must possess the ability to comply with Mercy and Trinity Health policies and procedures. This job is categorized as ""Heavy Work"". Has the physical stamina to meet the requirements of this job. Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly. Must be able to handle stress effectively. Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, internal and external, which may affect the work place, such as infectious disease, chemical and/or chemical fumes, dust, noise, physical injury from an out of control patient, and adverse effects of inclement weather which may occur.
