Staples Customs Compliance & Product Safety Specialist in Orange City, Iowa


Job Summary

  • Coordinates with suppliers and nominated freight forwarders for logistics planning and execution; manage on time booking, tendering, shipping and delivering of top quality products.

  • Maintain and monitor international ocean and air shipment rates to optimize service and costs and provide estimated freight costs.

  • Conscious of routing decisions and how they impact SPP’s freight margin goals.

  • Classification of promotional products to the harmonized tariff systems (Canadian and US tariffs)

  • Receive, review and process complex import documentation, monitor Customs entry process to ensure timely and accurate clearance, and provide technical expertise in the resolution of import issues

  • Record retention of Customs documentation for the mandatory period of six years.

  • Respond to CBSA and/or CBP customs inquiries.

  • The Customs Compliance & Product Safety Specialist has day-to-day operational responsibility for ensuring product compliance with applicable rules and regulations for promotional products. This position plays a key role in validating products sourced through our domestic supply chain network have been tested appropriately to adhere to regulatory requirements.

  • Familiarity with North American laws including, but not limited to: Health Canada, CPSC, CPSIA, California Proposition 65, FDA, ASTM F963-11, ASTM D4236, AATCC, Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse, State of Illinois Poisoning Prevention Act, etc.

  • Familiarity with labeling requirements: Canadian Federal and Provincial labels, CCPSA children’s products/toys distributed in Canada, FTC COO markings, verification of ecofriendly green claims, CPSIA tracking labels, ASTM F963-11 toy labels and warning statements.

  • Identify, prioritize risk and monitor nonconforming projects such as audit corrective action plans and any failed lab test reports where re testing is necessary.

  • The Product Safety Specialist will also be responsible for coordinating social accountability auditing of facilities. Work with a 3rd party auditor to verify the manufacturer’s facility meet or exceeds SPP’s and our customer’s code of conduct requirements. Review audit report findings and follow through on CAP (Corrective Action Plan) for the factory to make the necessary adjustments.

  • Interpret test results and provides recommendations to business on appropriate course of action.

  • Interface with testing laboratories to determine applicable regulations and track lab test status for our products

Education/Experience Equivalent (minimum requirements)

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and/or 2-4 years relevant work experience.

  • Strong knowledge of international trade and import regulations and procedures with all modes of transportation.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced working environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational skills and communication skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

  • Strong analytical and program management skills.
