Description/Job Summary

American Athletic, Inc is a major sports equipment manufacturing company located in Jefferson, Iowa. We are owned by Spalding; a division of Fruit of the Loom, an independent, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., & leading international basic apparel company.

We currently have an opening for a *Prototype and Tooling Machinist *in our Main building.

The Prototype and Tooling Machinist is responsible for prototype fabrication and manufacturing tooling/fixtures to support product development. This includes bringing a product from the conceptual stage through design, prototyping, development, testing, design verification/validation, and manufacturing using the latest technology. Responsible for building and maintaining all new/existing production fixtures and supporting manufacturing needs. Additionally, this position is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe working environment throughout the prototype shop.

Responsibilities/Duties

Set up and operate metalworking machine tools such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, die press, grinder, welder, CNC, etc. to machine parts to specifications. Verify parts are to specification. Performs arc and mig welding as required.

Analyze written specifications, drawings, rough sketches and verbal instructions to plan layout and determine sequence of operations. Select metal stock and lay out design according to dimensions computed from scaled drawings.

Consult with Engineering and other personnel regarding product information such as design, capacity and purpose, and types of material to be used to fabricate product.

Design fixtures, tooling and experimental parts to meet special Engineering and Production needs.

Test experimental models under simulated operating conditions for such purposes as development, standardization and feasibility of design.

Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend changes or modifications for efficiency and adaptability to setup and production.

All other duties as assigned.

Required Experience

  • Experience in Machinist/Tool & Die making or model making is a plus

Required Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in related field; or equivalent combination of Technical School/Apprenticeship and experience

  • Ability to proficiently use CNC/manual mills, lathes, and other machinery

  • Demonstrated innovativeness and creative ability

  • Well organized, detail oriented, and a team player capable of working in a deadline dictated environment with minimal supervision

  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office

  • Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings, bills of material, and routings
