JOB TITLE: Bus Driver

DEPARTMENT: Transportation

QUALIFICATIONS (required)

  1. Valid Commercial Driver’s License to drive a school bus.

  2. Current DOT Physical Card

  3. Must have an acceptable driving record.

  4. Must comply with Federal DOT drug testing requirements.

  5. Ability to handle a large vehicle efficiently.

  6. Ability to complete all required training programs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Satisfactory health conditions as dictated by the DOT and Iowa Department of Education and as certified by a competent licensed physician or medical authority.

  2. Visual acuity.

  3. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels.

  4. Occasional lifting of 50 pounds, dragging or pulling up to 100 pounds.

  5. Frequent walking, bending, stooping and climbing.

  6. Be free of impairment of the use of foot, leg, hand, or arm, or other defects of limitations likely to interfere with the ability to safely control a school bus.

  7. Operate the service door by pushing or pulling up to twenty five pounds with the right hand and arm.

  8. Depressing fuel and brake pedal with right foot and leg, requiring 70 pounds.

  9. Exit the rear emergency door without assistance. (approximately 3.5 feet)

  10. Repetitive hand movement and griping.

  11. Ability to walk 465 feet without stopping.

  12. Ability to fit through a 2 foot by 2 foot emergency exit.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Work in performed inside and around exterior of school bus.

  2. Occasional exposure to body fluids, fumes, noise and emergency situations.

  3. Occasional extreme temperatures and/or inclement weather.

REPORTS TO: Transportation Director

SUPERVISES: Students

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Twelve month work year with wages and benefits established by the Board.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy 411.7 Classified Employee Evaluation.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Must communicate effectively with school personnel.

  2. Will establish and maintain effective communication with the riders.

  3. Shall demonstrate efficient, effective communication with the publics served.

  4. Use proper radio communication skills.

  5. Must complete pre-trip inspections and use proper documentation.

  6. Legibly writes up service due notices according to rules established.

  7. Must operate the bus and related equipment in a safe, efficient and legal manner.

  8. Maintains and enforces all provisions of the District’s Bus Safety Rules for riders.

  9. Completes the assigned route/trip on a safe, but timely basis.

  10. Confronts emergency situations in accordance with safety-standard operational procedures.

  11. Must keep to a minimum complaints received from the public in regards to driving skills.

  12. Will work with the transportation director, on complaints received from parents in regards to discipline.

  13. Must complete expected post-trip route requirements.

  14. Reports vehicle/equipment defects to the appropriate personnel.

  15. Must demonstrate willingness to accept change in one’s normal routine.

  16. Must meet contractual obligations regarding attendance and punctuality.

  17. Must attend required training programs.

  18. Completes all required information on trip cards, mileage sheets, accident reports and etc. accurately according to Iowa Law and District expectations.

  19. Must keep the interior and exterior of the bus clean.

  20. Schedule a physical appointment to meet state law.

  21. Performs other duties as may from time to time be assigned.
