Responsibilities

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Provides professional nursing care for and enrolls/monitors adult patients in Clinical Research studies following the standards and practices of Mercy Medical Center / Mercy Cancer Center and of the CHI Institute for Research & Innovation (CIRI).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Oversees daily operations of the clinical trials research team, including team workflow.

  • Provides guidance to the clinical trials research team and acts as a liaison between the staff and the Oncology Service Line Director. (Note: Team lead and all clinical trials staff still report to the Oncology Service Line Director.)

  • Participates in staff development and assists with new employee orientation and training.

  • Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures specific to the clinical trials team.

  • Performs duties and functions of Research RN.

  • Oversees and ensures compliance with all clinical trials guidelines and research protocols.

  • Administration of research protocols by assisting physician investigators in identification of patients who meet inclusion/exclusion criteria, scheduling in office doctor and lab visits that are outside the standard of care visits. Responsible for working with Investigators and patients to obtain informed consent. Coordinate and/or perform research related tests in and outside the clinic. Maintain accurate documents, FDA records and case form records, complete health and drug histories and disease assessments. Review patient data for safety and administration purposes. Make corrections and clarifications of data for sponsor monitors.

  • Ensures all necessary paperwork is completed connected with research studies and coordinates all activities related to patients’ diagnostic testing, visits and evaluations; maintaining statistical collection of all protocols.

  • Assists Director of Oncology Service Line with evaluation of staff.

  • Maintains an understanding of all protocols which the group is involved in.

  • Travel to all Mercy Cancer Center offices, and the offices of affiliated physicians and other affiliated health center, as needed.

  • Assist with organization and triage of daily/weekly schedule; and show initiative to identify and implement ways to improving the job and surroundings for the entire team.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • Current licensures as R.N., state of Iowa or compact state.

  • Three years of RN nursing experience required. Two years of oncology nursing or critical care experience preferred. Three years of clinical trials experience may be substituted here.

  • Valid Iowa Driver’s/Chauffeurs License required, must meet Mercy’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, must be at least 18 years of age and be eligible to drive per Iowa state law.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained by the end of the orientation period (approximately six (6) weeks).

  • Excellent interpersonal communication
