As Director of Market Strategy & Intelligence, you will set the tone and drive the investment of Wellmark’s business initiatives. You will lead a team tasked with driving the translation of financial and qualitative market developments into practical, actionable insights. You will also manage secondary and primary research, conduct market size and share analysis, and execute competitive intelligence projects. Using your expertise, you will develop compelling, persuasive stories and points of view, where these insights will drive successful business strategies, prioritize opportunities and position Wellmark for continued competitive success. Collaboration with leadership, business stakeholders and other operational areas will be crucial in delivering solutions that meet customer needs and create the optimal customer experience, as measured by Wellmark’s proprietary Member Loyalty Index (MLI).

Bachelor’s degree or direct and applicable work experience.
5+ years of relevant industry experience (e.g., health care, health insurance, management consulting, financial services, other insurance) that includes:
Strategic planning and development of comprehensive business plans; forward thinking, knowledgeable of market and/or external influences, and strong financial acumen and understanding of customer needs.
Competitive market strategy/research/intelligence.
Collaborative relationships with executives, divisional leadership or operational teams resulting in the consistent development and delivery of strategic business planning solutions.
Demonstrated leadership experience, including developing a high performing team that consistently delivers value-added results to the business.
Advanced ability to balance industry expertise and business acumen with strong understanding of the customer.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate actionable business implications and recommendations to varying audiences, including senior leadership and executives. Strong presentation skills, negotiation skills, and the ability to influence others to achieve business results.
Analytical with the ability to synthesize large quantities of data/information into relevant, actionable recommendations. Creative, continuous improvement-focused approach.
Highly motivated, adaptable, and flexible with strong change management skills. Ability to prioritize strategic initiatives and lead teams through change.
Ability to travel as needed.
Master of Business Administration degree.
Health insurance or health care industry experience strongly preferred. Working knowledge of sales strategies/tactics, product distribution, business segments, agencies, etc.
Experience leading leaders.
a. Set the tone for market strategy by providing strategic direction and leadership for a team that supports Wellmark and divisional strategy and goals. Cascade and communicate strategy and initiatives to team members, driving customer/stakeholder service, supporting achievement of overall company results.
b. Provide leadership and day-to-day management of financial and human resources, primarily focusing on employee and leader coaching, development, performance improvement, coordination and budgeting for multiple staff, and department(s) specific functions/services.
c. Lead the development, implementation and execution of a market segment strategy. Ensure its aligned and designed for all market segments and focused on the achievement of membership, revenue and margin goals. Analyze industry trends, customer needs, competitive threats, expansion opportunities and synthesize large amounts of qualitative and quantitative data to identify critical insights and implications.
d. Deliver data-driven insights that support actionable strategic direction, corporate prioritization and communication. Support the overall corporate planning process and ad-hoc projects for executives, corporate requests and special events. Build market and competitive intelligence reports, dashboards and tracking structures.
e. Serve as subject matter expert for current and potential/emerging customer segmentation. Ensure the market strategy is focused on the integration of market insights, competitive intelligence and corporate strategies.
f. Collaborate with sales, finance, marketing communications and product strategy teams to identify and drive alignment with segment plans and strategies. Facilitate the ongoing relationships to ensure collaboration and the exchange of relevant information that may impact the segment strategy. Ensure plan stays on cutting edge of market trends.
g. Oversee and direct the facilitation of the annual enrollment forecasting by segment efforts, in collaboration with Sales, Product and Finance. Collaborate with Marketing Communications on a go-to market promotional strategy.
h. Lead the market insights team and ensure the market research by segment plan is aligned to meet the needs of the marketing strategy and focused on improving the member experience.
i. Provide quarterly status updates to senior leadership on the execution of the segment plans and proactively develop initiatives to address identified risks and segment performance issues.
j. Other duties as assigned.
