MidAmerican Energy Company Buyer/Senior Buyer in Des Moines, Iowa

This is a multi-level posting. Candidates may be considered for any of the posted levels, depending on their level of experience and depth of expertise.

Under limited guidance, acts as agent for the company to source and procure materials, equipment and services that meet specifications and schedules in the most cost effective manner, taking into account price, schedule and delivery as well as past supplier performance and quality. The position involves contact with the general public, suppliers, management and co-workers.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)

Prepares and initiates requests for proposals and analyzes price quotations from suppliers. Prioritizes requisitions to ensure equipment, material and services are obtained in a timely fashion with an emphasis on quality, cost and availability. Independently analyzes complex purchase requisitions and determines trends which could potentially lead to improved processes. Works with internal customers to review material and service requirements for projects and develop a procurement strategy to meet those needs. Assists and advises employees on preparing specifications and contacts for routine procurement activities including materials and services. (50%)

Issues purchase orders in accordance with company policies and procedures, obtaining and evaluating quotes, selecting vendor(s) and expediting of orders as required. (25%)

Negotiates and prepares contracts of a straightforward nature based on standard terms and conditions. (10%)

Investigates new sources of goods and services and keeps current with developments in commodity areas. (5%)

Expedites purchase orders as necessary and ensures appropriate personnel are informed of status. (5%)

Serves as technical and commercial advisor to standards committees. (0-5 %)

Assists with the disposition of company equipment that is no longer needed. (0-5 %)

Provides customer assistance for any system or process sponsored by the supply chain department. This can include training to co-workers within and outside the department. (0-5%)

Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned including work performed by senior supply chain specialist. (0-5%)

Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent work experience. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)

The buyer position requires three years of purchasing or financial experience with an industrial type company.

The senior buyer position requires five years of purchasing experience or a combination of purchasing and financial experience within a utility, manufacturing or an industrial type company.

Candidates who possess accredited purchasing/APICS certification, lean experience, and/or proven process improvement backgrounds will be preferred.

Experience with online requisitioning purchasing and inventory systems.

Consistently practices effective communication skills including listening, verbal and writing skills to process information timely and accurately.

Proficient in software skills, including word processing, spreadsheets and presentation tools, as well as the oracle purchasing and inventory systems.

Excellent interpersonal skills, a customer service focus and the ability to work as a member in a team-oriented environment. This includes the ability to provide instruction, guidance and information to others.

Strong personal computer skills such as demonstrated proficiency in Word and Excel, plus basic knowledge and ability in software packages such as PowerPoint and Visio. The ability to create documents and maintain information in department-specific software packages. Proficiency in keying and software program features based on required assessments.

Ability to read and interpret complex technical documents.

Project management skills to plan workflow including an ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently, coordinate assignments and resolve conflicting demands.

Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Ability to travel overnight as required.
