Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD)www.iowaschoolforthedeaf.orgis located on a 115 acre campus located on the southern edge of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The campus is within 15 minutes of downtown Omaha, Nebraska. ISD serves students from the states of Iowa and Nebraska.

Be part of a highly qualified team providing educational services to Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Responsibilities include leadership of education programs, coordination of academic activities, and collaboration with other departments in order to provide quality education for all students.

Primary Function:

The School Counselor provides support to the Principal by providing services and instruction in support of the curricular goals of Iowa School for the Deaf. The school counselor and classroom teachers collaborate to develop, teach and evaluate school goals with the emphasis on the following:

  • Curriculum, programs and responsive services that address growth and development of all students.

  • Attainment of student competencies in academic, career, personal, and social areas through education, prevention, and intervention activities.

  • Curriculum delivered through classroom and group activities that consists of structured lessons to help student achieve desired competencies and to provide all student with the knowledge and skills appropriate for their developmental level.

  • Teaches knowledge, attitudes, and skills students need to acquire academic, career, and social/emotional development.

  • Support of activities including professional development, consultation and collaboration.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

Curriculum Support

  • Provide regular student activities and lessons in academic, career, and personal/social domains

  • Act as a resource to teachers and other staff regarding the social-emotional growth and development of students

  • Collaborate with families, teachers, administrators, and other school staff for student achievement and success

  • Help promote a positive atmosphere in the school which enables the educational team to meet student needs

    Daily Response

  • Counsel students in the personal/social and academic domains

  • Provide referral services, collaborating with others as needed

  • Parent communication through phone, VP, email, or visits.

  • Daily intervention with students when needed

Individual Planning meetings

  • Establish appropriate interagency connections and act as a liaison between families and community agencies as needed

  • Attend IEP meetings when needed

  • Collaborate with school staff in reviewing student academic and behavior data to develop plans, supports, and services including behavior interventions

  • Monitor student attainment of academic, social/personal, and career competencies

Program Support

  • Coordinate integration to and from public school programming

  • Coordinate grade reports and assist with Parent-Teacher conferences

  • Assist in providing transition and orientation activities for students

  • Assist with Student intakes: tours, contacts, request records, attend IEP, write recommendation summary

  • Provide interdepartmental and parent communication

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • One of the following current licenses from the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners:

  • School Psychologist; or

  • School Counseling; or

  • Speech Language Pathologist.

  • All of the following (a and b):

    A. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in orientation and mobility; and B. Possession of a current Iowa Orientation and Mobility Specialist license.
    1. All of the following (a and b):

      A. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field; and

      B. Possession of a current Iowa Teaching Certificate.

Additional Qualification Requirements

To be considered, an applicant must possess or have the ability to obtain an Iowa License, with aProfessional School Counseling (https://boee.iowa.gov/endorsement/professional-school-counselor-k-8) endorsement. Other endorsements are helpful.

Sign language skills required.

Knowledge-based competencies of Iowa Core and Expanded Core Curriculum for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.

Applicants must possess the ability to reach the level of sign language proficiency designated for the position within the time frame established by the School's Sign Language Policy.
