Job Description

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Judicial Branch. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.


Primarily assigned to work for a District Court Judge in the Fourth Judicial District. May be required to work for any Judicial Officer in the Fourth Judicial District per operational needs and may require travel. Anticipated start date of September 3, 2021.

Fourth Judicial District counties: Audubon, Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, and Shelby.


Takes court testimony and proceedings by shorthand reporting methods. Reads back court testimony and proceedings upon request. Makes verbatim typed record of testimony and proceedings as required. Prepares transcripts, performs general office work and provides substantial clerical support for the court. Marks and records exhibits during court proceedings.

Electronic document filing is required in all District 4 counties, so a high level of computer proficiency is essential. Performs related work as determined by the supervising judicial officer or the Chief Judge or his designee. Specific primary assignment(s) as designated by the District Court Administrator.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Graduation from high school (GED); graduation from a school of court reporting with courses including legal and medical terminology, English, typing and law. Must be certified as a court reporter by the Iowa Board of Shorthand Reporters or become certified within one year of hire.

Final candidates must be able to pass a criminal background check.

The Iowa Judicial Branch is an E-Verify employer.
