Job Title: Mechanic
Department: Truck Shop
Inspect diagnoses and performs preventative maintenance and repairs on semi-trailers and tractors. Responsible for furnishing own small hand tools.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Performs repairs on tractors and trailers as needed.
Performs preventative maintenance on tractors and trailers. Services reefer units, replaces worn or broken parts and wires.
Inspects vehicles and writes up worn or broken parts such as starters, alternators, clutches, and brakes; tests electrical and mechanical systems to ensure everything is in working order.
Conducts inspections on equipment to meet federal guidelines.
Maintains accurate record of work performed and parts used.
Performs tire work on equipment.
Reports to work when scheduled and on time.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
Performs minor repairs to building and services equipment.
Rotates being on call and responds to service calls out of town in accordance with department rotation.
Performs oil changes, greases jobs, and minor repairs.
Performs data entry of job orders and parts used on.
Attends and participates in company meetings as needed.
Cleans work area and maintains cleanliness.
Keeps updated & properly follows procedures for disposal of tires, oil, & other by products.
Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.
Education and Experience
High school or equivalent experience. Courses or technical certification in automotive maintenance helpful. Courses or technical certification in refrigeration necessary. Type 2 air conditioning certification. Valid CDL license preferred. More than six months up to one year of similar or related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics
Must be able to solve practical problems; several abstract and concrete variables.
Must be able to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Must be able to interpret written work instructions; understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions; write identifying information; request supplies verbally or in writing.
Must be physically able to perform very heavy work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Visual requirements include vision from 20 inches or less to 20 feet or more with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, climbing, balancing, bending, and repetitive motions.
The duties of this position are performed in a truck repair shop/outdoor setting. There is exposure to diesel smoke, dirt, grease, noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, dangerous chemical/solvents, and electrical shock. There is significant pressure to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks in a day.
Equipment Used To Perform Job
Standard tools and equipment used for truck maintenance and repair including welders, electronic analyzers, alignment equipment, battery testers, and forklift. Standard tools and equipment used for reefer maintenance and repair including A/C recovery machine and leak detector, vacuum pump, and pressure gauges. Also uses a PC computer and printer, telephone, fax machine, and a copier. Must have own hand tools.
Has contact with parts suppliers and company drivers on a daily basis.
