BSI Engineering Structural Designer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Structural Designer

Our Structural team is skilled and educated to assess the stability, strength, and rigidity of our client’s physical structures. The BSI Structural team will analyze the buildings and work with other members of the design team to ensure all structures are secure and up to code.

Our team can address any our client’s civil and structural needs, surrounding any process engineering and design. Our Civil/ Structural group has a broad range of experience across all process industries. Capabilities and project experience range from building modifications and upgrades, to new buildings and new plant equipment support systems, to complex structures within an existing manufacturing operating environment.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers field data and uses the design criteria document(s) to meet the project objectives

  • Ensures quality and technical accuracy of project deliverables

  • Follows the BSI Standard Operating Procedures and Client Standards

  • With supervision, performs or ensures applicable calculations and design effort to prepare drawings deliverables

  • Ensures discipline's design is accurate and coordinated within the 2D drawings and/or 3D model and/or site scans

  • Meets individual schedule and budget objectives on assigned projects

  • Assists in cost estimating

  • With limited assistance, initial layout of multiple steel elements in plan and section

  • With limited assistance, initial layout for multiple concrete elements, including but not limited to foundations

  • With limited assistance, initial layout for masonry design, including but not limited to coursing and bonding's

  • Properly utilize typical structural details

  • Coordination of framing and foundation sections and details to the coinciding structural plans

  • Participates in construction support, startup and commissioning efforts

  • Identifies individual training needs and goals, receives training from others and may attend outside seminars, and mentors’ others

  • Interfaces with other design discipline counterparts and project management as needed

  • Understands the role of other disciplines and overall project requirements during the project lifecycle

  • With supervision may participate in interactive planning sessions to ensure scope, schedule, costs and quality are aligned to project objectives

  • Continually communicates their individual forecasted staffing requirements for their assigned projects

  • Strives to achieve the targeted billability goals for position

  • Provides regular updates of individual marketing resume

  • When requested, provides timely peer feedback to formal performance reviews

    Requirements

  • Associate (Discipline) Engineering Technology Degree and/or Computer Drafting and Design Degree preferred but not required; High School Diploma required

  • 5+ years of industry experience

  • Proficient skills using Revit is required

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • Developing presentation skills

  • Decision making skills

  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks

  • Developing leadership and conflict resolution skills

  • Knowledge and experience with the design of steel, concrete and masonry

  • Project experience should include structural industrial and manufacturing facilities design

  • Project experience with site layout plans, grading plans and drainage design

  • Have familiarity with applicable codes
