Collins Aerospace is seeking an Engineering Co-op to join the Commercial Systems Reliability Engineering team in supporting the development of innovative aviation electronics solutions for the world’s leading Air Transport, Business & Regional and Military avionics companies. Position Description

Specific assignments may range from:

  • Helping to conduct Accelerated Stress Testing, which includes testing products in a Highly Accelerated Stress Testing chamber that stresses products thermally and with vibration, separately and combined. This chamber has Liquid Nitrogen boost and super heaters that allow ambient air transition rates of up to 80°C/min. This is a systematic way to accelerate the aging process of the products in order to identify and correct any design or manufacturing process issues prior to fielding the equipment.

  • Helping to conduct Proof of Screen tests which validate the Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) profiles used for Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) in manufacturing of avionics. ESS is a method of testing equipment to precipitate latent defects out of the products prior to customer delivery. HASS is an accelerated method to conduct ESS and each product must be qualified for HASS before the population of products can undergo this screening. The PoS validates the HASS profile and ensures that the high environmental stresses applied to the products will not harm them, or reduce their useful life.

  • Assisting Reliability Engineers with reliability predictions using the 217Plus Reliability Prediction methodology. The output of a Reliability Prediction serves a few purposes: failure rates are provided for each component predicted, which are then used in predicting the frequency of failure of specific failure modes in a product (used in FMEAs and Fault Trees), to provide an initial idea of what the field reliability of a product will be once put into service (MTBF), and sometimes for estimating the differences in reliability of competing designs.

  • Assisting Reliability Engineers with Failure Modes and Effects Analyses, which are done to identify functional or component failure modes and their associated effects on the equipment and system in order to ensure that they are detectable and do not have the possibility of creating an unsafe effect on the operation of the aircraft.

  • Assisting Reliability Engineers with a variety of other engineering tasks, including Derating Analysis, ESS Effectiveness Assessments, field data analysis, etc.

Assignment ComplexityThe individual will work in the Reliability engineering discipline, which is not included in most engineering degree curriculums, but for which an Electrical Engineering background (with a Mechanical Engineering minor) is ideally suited

Accountability

The individual will work under general and limited direction in relation to long range organization and group goals as well as being responsible for successful completion of assigned tasks within the committed schedule. The individual will be held accountable for implementing the workload set forth by the Group Manager and the assigned engineering mentor.

Position Requirements and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of physics and electronics

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office tools is required

  • Completion of Sophomore year in an Engineering degree program is a minimum requirement, ideally the candidate is pursuing an Electrical Engineering degree (a Mechanical Engineering candidate might also qualify).

  • Effective oral/written communication skills (including technical writing)

  • Effective interpersonal and team skills

Basic Qualifications

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelor's or advanced degree in an applicable discipline.

  • Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident “Green Card” holder.
