Job Profile Summary

To conduct R&D projects, laboratory procedures and analysis, and assist in development of new processes/new products and analytical methods for improving products and/or product development

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: B.S. with experience or M.S. such as in protein chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry, or biology

Experience: Experience related to protein chemistry and fractionation with immunochemical analysis of proteins will be preferred.

JOB DUTIES:

Use knowledge of protein chemistry/biochemistry to plan and execute laboratory research in blood protein separation.

Perform and develop analytical and immunochemical assays to characterize blood proteins.

Assist and develop product development processes for blood protein fractionation by researching new processes or improving current processes and helping to move them from laboratory testing to the pilot plant and manufacturing testing.

Write standard operating procedures (SOP) for analytical techniques and proper use of equipment.

Provide assistance to colleagues to achieve objectives of R&D team

Technical input and process troubleshooting in situations as they arise in the lab and pilot plant for new and existing processes and procedures as requested.

Develop written research protocols with clear objectives, timelines, etc. to conduct research.

Prepare scientific and technical reports as requested.

Summarize data and maintain accurate data records of projects, presenting information as requested.

Improve and develop new skills by attending conferences/seminars and continuing education as required.

Maintain proper care and usage of analytical equipment.

Blending and preparing product samples.

Ordering and maintaining supplies such as ingredients, laboratory supplies, chemicals, etc. needed to conduct laboratory test and R&D projects.

Keep facility in well maintained condition.

Perform literature and resource searches, both at the University libraries and on the internet, to gain knowledge and remain current in areas of protein fractionation, animal health, and immunochemistry for application in development of new products and processes.

All other related duties as assigned by Senior Director R&D

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Travel: approximately 10%

Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices and ability to implement research and product development.

Experience working in an analytical research lab.

Knowledge of research and development principles and the ability to develop collect data, and implement research methods/techniques.

Knowledge of chemistry/biochemistry with specific knowledge in the field of protein chemistry preferred.

Knowledge of fractionation methods and ability to apply these methods in the development of products and research and development and statistical analysis is a plus for candidate.

Ability to communicate both written and oral effectively of technical information with research staff, other departments, consumers, and manufacturers.

Ability to perform basic and complex mathematical calculations.

Ability to manage and maintain confidential information such as new product information, R&D projects, proprietary formulas, research data, etc.

Knowledge of organizational methods and ability to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.

Ability to operate all necessary office equipment required to accomplish job duties, such as, computers, telephones, fax machines, copiers, etc.

Ability to work daily and extended hours as necessary.

Ability to assist in other work related areas as requested.

Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.

BASIC MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

This job requires the mental capabilities to apply research knowledge/principles to analyze varied laboratory samples. The incumbent must possess excellent communication skills to explain technical information to personnel of all levels, and must be able to work closely and in cooperation with others.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND EXPOSURES:

Working conditions vary. A portion of the job duties occur within a general office environment with extended periods of computer time while other job duties occur within a laboratory and pilot plant setting with exposure such as volatile, acidic and alkaline substances.
