  • Position Summary

  • Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care. Under general supervision, performs nonprofessional work assisting the pharmacist in routine duties of the pharmacy; performs some professional work under direct supervision of a pharmacist; performs related work as required.

  • Prepares purchase orders, places orders and receives incoming pharmaceuticals. Maintains minimum/maximum drug quantity levels, identifies and processes outdated medications per policy for credit. Purchases pharmaceuticals utilizing group or individual contract agreements and the associated computerized ordering systems; rotates stock.

  • A technician will stand-in for the “Inventory Control Specialist” in his/her absence.

  • Operates calculator, computers, copier, electronic (bar code) order entry device and other equipment.

  • Performs clerical duties such as typing, filing and record keeping. Inputs patient charges or credits daily via computer for miscellaneous medications that are not performed through POC.

  • Verifies selected charge items and makes adjustments where indicated. Assembles fiscal, statistical and related clerical data to prepare routine orders.

  • Updates NetLearning, scheduling for the technicians, end of the month billing, and payroll (Kronos) functions.

  • Orders and restocks shelves for Outpatient Pharmacy; assists Outpatient Pharmacist in computer entry of prescriptions, counting, and labeling medications.

  • Prepares Title XIX billing, runs patient specific reports, removes outdates, and maintains a clean work environment.

  • Performs other assigned duties.

  • Assist Pharmacist in reading, interpreting all medications ordered by a licensed practitioner. Screen all medication orders for required information including patient name, room number, time needed, allergies, bar code, etc.

  • Assist pharmacists in the preparation and delivery of medications to all patient care areas. This would include counting, packaging, and labeling of medications to be sent to the floor for routine orders and the exchange of patient medication bins.

  • Prepackages all medications into a bar-coded unit dose form which may include but not limited to tablets, capsules, indictable, and liquids. The technician will maintain appropriate records for this process.

  • Prepares and compounds all sterile large and small volume parenterals, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and epidurals according to strict aseptic technique in a clean air hood under the supervision of a pharmacist. Maintains appropriate records and chain of accountability in all sterile product preparation.

  • Assists pharmacists in all pharmacy functions with exception of narcotic drug dispersion, cancer chemotherapy and addition of additives to TPN preparations.

  • Prepares special solutions, syringes and other sterile products as requested by a Pharmacist throughout the shift. This may include the preparation of sterile batch compounds.

  • Adheres to all department policies with regard to cleaning the hoods, documenting refrigerator and freezer temperatures, restocking the IV room, and maintaining a sterile room environment.

  • Assists Pharmacist in the filling and distribution of floor stock narcotics and keeping required records of dispensation. This would include delivering to the nursing units twice daily and anesthesia fanny packs each evening. Maintains all files of narcotic forms.

  • Adheres to department policies when preparing and delivering medications to the automated medication dispensing system (i.e. Omnicell).

  • Process/replenish all medications kits used within the organization which include MICS boxes, OB and Baby packs, GI boxes, emergency cart trays and other kits/boxes on an as needed basis.

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):

  • Must complete in-house technician training program in computer order entry and sterile product preparation

  • Must obtain national certification by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy within one (1) year of hire.

  • Must obtain Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification through either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) within one (1) year of hire.

  • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Organizational Requirements:

  • Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of non-professional pharmacy experience

  • Highschool diploma or GED

  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Knowledge of general clerical and business office procedures.

  • Knowledge of the operation of simple office machines.

  • Knowledge of the operation of the medical center pharmacy computer system.

  • Ability to understand oral and written instruction.

  • Ability to learn and complete routine duties in an accurate and timely fashion.

  • Ability to prepackage medication and fill medication carts.

  • Skill in performing routine non-professional pharmacy duties with accuracy and timeliness.
