Job Description:

The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is now accepting applications for a Manager of Clinical Support in the hospital’s Small Animal ICU section.

Schedule, supervise, and conduct monthly meetings with veterinary technicians, coordinator, and emergency student workers assigned to ICU and Emergency and Critical Care services. Perform day-to-day problem solving independently and in conjunction with other similarly classified staff within the department to address patient and operational issues that may arise.

Responsible for providing direction on searches for vacant and/or new positions within its services; coordinating, scheduling, and conducting interviews; hiring; evaluating and conducting reviews during probationary periods and annually for its staff.

Be knowledgeable in and enforce ISU policies to include but not limited to Regent Merit System policies, UHR employment and benefit policies, LVMC internal policies and SOP’s.

Counsel and support staff directly supervised and serve as mediator between staff and faculty within the service area. Create and enforce performance improvement plans (PIPs) to staff directly supervised, when necessary. Some after hours, nights, and weekends will be expected to effectively supervise staff who work those alternate hours. Create and implement technician training program protocols, to include training of new technicians and training in advanced techniques for technicians who want and qualify for such advanced training.

Oversee implementation of EH&S safety protocols and ensure Incident Reports are submitted in a timely fashion for all incidents that take place in ICU, and regardless of direct witness to the incident.

Although routine hospital business hours are from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm on Monday through Friday, the LVMC is open for patient care 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. The incumbent may be asked to answer urgent questions from employees supervised and/or meet with employees during off-peak times, weekends and holidays. Likewise, the supervisor may fulfill duties after-hours, on weekends, or holidays to meet the needs of the service as necessary.

It is essential that this position have a strong knowledge of veterinary technical duties and an understanding of the coordination of services in a hospital setting. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, be self-motivated, able to work independently or as a team, maintain confidentiality, and be detail oriented. Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational qualities, and effective oral and written communications are necessary to be successful in this position. The successful candidate will possess the ability to work with and directly supervise the work of others. The ideal candidate will have professional maturity with a leadership style that contributes to a positive culture, and have a compassionate, and empathetic nature towards the clients and patients of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center.
