Job Description:

The Department of Animal Science is currently accepting applications for a Swine Farms Manager. This position will be responsible for leading and managing the daily operations of the swine farms. This position will be involved with implementing research projects, interactions with faculty and other research groups on conducting research trials, coordinating provisions of animals for Animal Science classes, teaching specific labs for various courses in Animal Science oversight of unit maintenance of the facilities, fiscal management of the units and supervising full time and part time employees. This position will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of farm management and care of swine at all units.

Supervises 2 full time staff and up to 10 student/hourly employees in an agricultural operation and oversees volunteers and visitors.• Manages budget, equipment, supplies, machinery, grounds, of the Animal Science multiple swine entities.• Plans research and teaching space needs, monitors herd health, facilities usage and equipment maintenance, and schedules activities for care and use of agricultural operations.• Oversees maintenance of facilities, property, and equipment. This position is vital to ensuring the success of the daily operations of the Animal Science swine program.• Collaborates on development of plans and priorities for facility usage retrofit and replacement.

Maintains• May perform any duties of the agricultural specialists or assigned.

Example of Duties• Supervises staff in an agricultural operation and oversees volunteers and visitors.• Manages budget, equipment, supplies, machinery, grounds, etc.• Plans, monitors, and schedules activities for care of agricultural operations.• Oversees maintenance of facilities, property, and equipment.• Develops plans and determines priorities.• May perform any duties of the agricultural specialists.Level Guidelines• Aware of key annual objectives of department or work unit• Understands linkage between daily activities and achievement of annual objectives of department/work unit and explains to direct reports• Focus on ISU’s mission and meeting department or work unit goals• Supervises a small department or work team• Often is a working supervisor with direct, previous experience performing work of those supervised• Has full management responsibility for direct reports, specifically the authority to hire, fire, and counsel; may share part of responsibility with higher level management• Requests approval for financial actions beyond a limited scope per policy
