Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a variety of campus units and work towards the success of the University as a whole.

Demonstrated financial management skills, including preparation, management, analysis, forecasting, and reporting of a multi-million-dollar operating budget.

Experience employing marketing strategies that create positive public perceptions and drive engagement while supporting and complementing an institutional brand strategy.

Public speaking experience in a professional setting.

Leadership experience in a botanical garden, museum, nonprofit organization, or organization of a similar size and complexity.

Experience which demonstrates successful team building, supervisory skills, and volunteer engagement.

Experience in operational and risk management.

Job Description:

Iowa State University is seeking its new Director of Reiman Gardens. With its stunning gateway to Iowa State University, Reiman Gardens enchants, educates, and inspires environmental stewardship through displays of living beauty. Reiman Gardens offers a landscape unlike any other in Iowa. It is home to an award-winning rose garden, nearly 40 individual gardens showcasing an array of biodiversity, a conservatory, a learning center, and the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing featuring butterflies native to six continents.

The Director of Reiman Gardens at Iowa State University is responsible for providing visionary leadership, strategic direction, continued development, and daily operational oversight of the 17-acre botanic garden. The Director will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with donors, volunteers, and other stakeholders by fostering successful collaborations that lead to impactful initiatives and diverse funding streams. The Director should possess excellent communication and leadership skills to manage a Director’s Advisory Council and a team of staff and volunteers, engage with the university and the public, and oversee major fundraising for the Gardens.

The Director will be responsible for the administration of a $3 million operating budget with a strong emphasis on revenue growth, professionally representing the Gardens, marketing the Gardens to increase visibility and visitor engagement, and developing and implementing business strategies.

They will oversee strategic marketing plans and brand positioning effort by marketing and promoting the Gardens locally, nationally, and internationally. The Director ensures alignment with university master brand strategy and architecture while elevating the unique position and value proposition of the Gardens.

The Director will be responsible for shaping the Gardens’ future, building on its historic strengths while motivating further development and growth to ensure its continued success. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader, passionate about advancing the Gardens’ mission and programs and enhancing its impact on the university, community, and world, in support of the University’s strategic plan. The successful candidate will be a collaborative, innovative and creative professional who can inspire and engage others.

This role encompasses the management of all aspects of the Gardens, including ensuring superlative plant displays and visitor experience, education outreach, and programming to ensure its continued excellence, and to expand its contribution to research, education, and conservation.
