Preferred Qualifications:Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering, physics, materials science, or related fields.

Demonstrated experience in the following areas:Systems level modeling for substituting permanent magnets and other critical materials in motors and generators.

Use of commercial Multiphysics software and programming with MATLAB.

Advancing critical materials reuse/recycling through systems level modeling.

Modeling of losses in electromagnetic materials and systems.

Modeling of soft and hard magnetic materials.

Experimental validation of modeling results.

Experience in preparing manuscripts for publication, creating presentations, and presentation of results.

Experience in external collaborations and preparing of progress reports.

Experience in training students and supporting pursuit of research funds.

Experience working in mid- to large- research group.

The Division of Critical Materials at Ames National Laboratory is seeking a scientist for research on modeling as applied to the criticality of materials. The position will also be responsible for oversight of laboratory equipment and space. The position will be filled at Ames Laboratory Scientist I level.

This position will assist in performing research on system levels modeling as applied to substitution of critical materials and advancing reuse/recycling opportunities. Systems of interest include, but are not limited to electric motors, generators, batteries, etc. Background in modeling and understanding of soft and hard magnetic materials will be advantageous in fulfilling the needs for this position. The successful candidate will be expected to perform some experimental characterization work especially for, but not limited to, validating modeling results. The position is expected to demonstrate the ability to innovate as a means for addressing critical materials challenges.

This position will also provide daily oversight of the equipment and laboratory spaces. The incumbent will help in training and supporting students and postdocs and help with providing oversight for laboratory hygiene and safety policies.

Additionally, the position will help in writing proposals, scientific publications; evaluating current laboratory procedures/processes; and implementing new practices to maximize efficiency of the laboratory and equipment.

This position involves multiple tasks with the ability to prioritize various temporally interrelated tasks and complete them as efficiently as possible. Proficiency and knowledge of related competencies is important for success in this position. Incumbent must possess the ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse set of staff including principal investigators, staff scientists, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, undergraduate research assistants and other external stakeholders. The ability to learn new skills related to the technologies integral to materials research is important for success in this position.
