T. Marzetti Company Lab Technician in Altoona, Iowa

The QA Laboratory Technician is responsible for ensuring the microbiological safety of food products produced by the company. The lab tech is responsible for the daily operations within the laboratory including but not limited to: preparation and plating of food samples, media and solution preparation, interpretation of results, accurate record keeping, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

  • Understand and follow GMPs and SOPs.

  • Maintain a clean work environment.

  • Accurate record keeping of test data and results.

  • Communicate openly with co-workers and supervisors.

  • Work independently and as part of team to ensure quality standards are met.

  • Ensure a safe work environment that is in compliance with safety policies and procedures of the company.

  • Preparation of growth media and solutions for laboratory use.

  • Preparation and plating of food samples for determination of quality using aseptic technique.

  • Reporting results that are not within compliance standards to direct supervisor.

  • Time management to ensure all daily, weekly and monthly task goals are met.

  • Experience with aseptic technique, media and solution preparation and laboratory equipment including autoclaves, electronic pipettes, and pH meters.

  • Working knowledge of food microbiology.

  • Strong computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Word and Excel.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Works in an office, laboratory and manufacturing environment where the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, crouch, reach and bend while moving about the facility. Requires some lifting of moderately heavy items such as test equipment and product cases. The employee is regularly exposed to moving machines and handling of hazardous testing and sanitation chemicals. The noise level in the lab is moderate and loud in the plant. Hairnets, ear plugs, goggles and gloves are required in accordance with GMP and safety standards. The employee is exposed to food allergens (wheat, eggs, milk, soy) and airborne particles of flour and other finely milled dry ingredients
